Homemade Tortillas Anyone!?

So when you are a military family (like us) you get to meet the best people from traveling. Our neighbor, and friend, has her Grandmother visiting for a while. Grandma is such an amazing woman and takes the stroll outside to come visit me and DS during the day. She comes by almost every day. So far she has given me a crochet needle and yarn to practice on BUT this evening she taught me how to make tortillas!

To learn to make tortillas is a skill. You have to make sure you have just the right amount of everything, including the warm water.

Nothing was really measured, but why should it be when the recipe is in your head! So I am going to share what I THINK may be the measurements for my approximately TWO dozen tortillas we made tonight!

Ingredients:
2 Cups Flour
2 Teaspoons baking soda
1 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Cup Shortening
1 1/2 Cups warm Water
YIELDS: Approx 2 doz

In a LARGE bow, using your HANDS, mix together dry ingredients. Than add in Shortening. Mix with your HANDS. Then in intervals add warm water. Mix dough well with your HANDS.

Knead dough about 20 times

Roll into balls with your hands (like the size of a ice cream scooper) Use shortening to coat your hands when rolling the balls, prevents sticking

Prepare skillet (I used my cast iron skillet) heat up on about 7 (stove top temp)

Roll balls of dough into flour. Use rolling pin to roll out into thin circle. Then use hands to help stretch the dough a little more (Sorry I don't have pics for this)

Place dough onto UNGREASED hot skillet. Cook for about 15 seconds each side, flipping about twice each side

ENJOY!
