Drama King

Yes, I said that right, Drama King. Who needs a Queen when we have a King. Our DS has been extremely moody lately. My baby is hitting his "terrible twos" and I am confused at how to handle his little outbursts, tantrums, and mood swings. I feel like I am a mom to a middle school girl!

DS can be playing peacefully by himself or with me and Daddy and then BAM his little inner devil comes out and he's angry that his car didn't turn in the right direction or that the blocks wont stay connected (though I tried to explain the are two different sizes).

I am sure that it doesn't help that 95% of the time we are inside due to the freezing cold temperatures and almost foot of snow that we've had for the past three weeks. Maybe it's cabin fever? We take him to the YMCA and use their water park about once or twice a week to get the energy out.

I am getting so impatient with our weather. Why can't Spring arrive earlier. DS loves playing on his play-set, riding his tricycle, and pulling my flowers. Is there such a thing as a "Spring" dance? Bring on the rain and green grass!

Anyhow, does anyone have good advice to keep an active toddler busy while stuck inside? How about controlling tantrums and anger? Should I just go with it and let it pass?

Oh sweetie I wish I had some advice for you. I went through the same thing with my little man. He eventually grew out of it. But I have to agree I think it is a lot to do with the weather and being stuck inside. Just getting out and doing new things is about all you can do. Does he like making things? Maybe try painting, coloring or making crafts at home. That seems to always work for us! Good luck!

I have the same issues some days with my DD. I have found crafts to be the best past time.
- homemade playdough
- pudding food dye finger paints
- foam put together pictures
- baking
- chalk drawing

These are the few things we have done that keeps her entertained and not a grouchy puss. On days that she refuses to do anything I just let it run it's course. We put in a movie and just play on the floor. I think it is cabin fever.

Do you think he would be able to handle playdough without eating it? If you google "playdough recipe" you can find plenty of recipes for making playdough yourself. Does your local library have a play area for kids? Or do you have a McDonalds with a playplace or a mall play area?

My daughter is 17 months and she's hitting "2" early, I suspect, because she's been like you've described your son for a couple months now. Everything I've read says not to pay attention to their tantrums, but to give them lots of positive attention when they're not being grouches. Good luck to you!

Warm water, a short shot of Bourbon, and 1 tablespoon of honey. Knock him right out, thats what we used to get from Grandma.

The pool has to be so fun for him...that's great! We just moved from CO and I know what you are going through.
I have 3 kiddos (7, 9, 12 now) and when they were little I put together a craft drawer for them...totally for them and we use it to this day. Your guy is little right now so there won't be too much to put in but washable markers, paper, glue sticks, things that will definitely be messy but not permanent. He can rip the paper to shreds and you can help him glue the pieces onto something. He can write all over the paper with the marker...maybe you will inspire a little amazing creativity to hang up and decorate with. Playdoh is great fun too! Maybe you could through down some bird seed near a low window and he could watch the birds...he will love it and so will the birds!
Bundle up and go for a walk too. That was never a favorite of mine but they sure loved it.
Stay warm, Stay safe!

Thank you ALL for these amazing tips! Went to the craft store yesterday and bought some felt to cut into shapes and to make crafts with DS. I also got some pudding for finger paints (Thank you Tara). Now, I guess after nap we will try bundling up for a few minutes outside! Now...I am going to have to find a recipe for edible play dough!
